I was awoken at 4:30 this morning by a repeated thumping/banging. We live in a pier and beam house with hardwood flooring, so you immediately have to check and make sure it’s not a kid running, a robber or a ghost. My wife got up(yes, you read that right) and looked out our bedroom windows but saw nothing. I then got up and wandered the whole house.

We live on the corner of a fairly large street and across the road is a shopping center (not large). Well, they’ve begun remodeling the facade and at 4:30 this morning, two men were breaking up pillars with sledgehammers.

Right. 4:30. A.M. In the morning. What in the world ?!?!

I laid in bed and listened and oddly, this verse came to mind –

We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time.

I know it’s weird, but the constant thumping made me think – this is what creation does. It is there banging, pleading for rebirth. For newness. For reconciliation to what it once was. If you back up and take the verse in context you get this –

For the creation waits in eager expectation for the children of God to be revealed. For the creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the freedom and glory of the children of God. We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption to sonship, the redemption of our bodies.

The whole earth is waiting to be freed from bondage. I think it’s just a steady banging. A steady knocking. And I think the longer it waits , the louder it’ll become.

You can see the groaning in the earth as animals struggle to exist in an ever increasingly dangerous world. But you see the groaning in humans more –

The face of the orphan longing for love. The face of wrongly accused looking for justice. The face of the single mom looking for strength. The face of so many that the church has slapped in the face looking for God.

We all groan, not that we long for Heaven, but that we long for a new creation here, now. That the redemption of Christ begins today, not when we die. Not that we buy insurance against death, for if that is all Christ is to you, you still give death more power. The power of Christ changes you now. You move from death to life now. You become full of his power and love now.

Don’t ever let someone convince you that we exist to move on to another world. We exist here. Now. We work towards Christ now. You are redeemed now. Creation groans because it can be changed now. It can taste of God’s measure now.

The redemption of adoption is beautiful – you pass from without to plenty. God does that now. You move from emptiness to an adopted heir to the kingdom. As Bono says –

My father is a rich man
He wears a rich man’s cloak
He gave me the keys to his kingdom coming
Gave me a cup of gold

We get these things here today. Seek him. Seek first his kingdom. Seek first his lordship. Your inward groaning will fall away. For those already redeemed, seek to see his kingdom move in others.
